Sarah Oliver - Ginkgo Financial Ltd

Sarah Oliver Paraplanner

Your job in a nutshell
I work closely with the advisers, managing much of the pre- and post-meeting work – the research, reports and analysis. It’s technical work: you need to evidence and justify everything. I’m a very logical, thorough person, so it plays to my strengths.

Tell me about your first paid job?
In my late teens I did my fair share of babysitting but my first proper job was bar work at a local pub. I wasn’t very good at it but I do know how to pull a pint!

What led you to where you are now?
I began my career with a large investment bank in London: first as an Equity Research Analyst and later as an Equity Sales Relationship Manager. I decided to leave the City after having my second child and joined Ginkgo in 2017. It’s great to be able to use all my skills without the pressures on family life of a career in the City.

What was the first thing you bought with your own money?
I used to love browsing in music shops for CDs to add to my collection… It’s a memory that seems overly nostalgic in today’s era of streaming.

What’s the most frivolous thing you’ve ever bought?
A couple of extra days on holiday! We were having such a good time, the weather was amazing, the place we were staying didn’t need us to check out… So we paid to push our flights back a couple of days. Our memories of that family holiday are still some of our best.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Be more confident in voicing your views and ask more questions. Inexperience doesn’t mean your opinions aren’t valid so long as you’re willing to learn from the knowledge others have amassed from their own experience.

What’s the best thing about working at Ginkgo?
Joining Ginkgo Financial has been a very welcome change to my working life and I count myself lucky be part of such a friendly, committed and professional team; a team that understands the importance of family and, in turn, strives to help its clients plan and provide the best for theirs.
